In recent years, the frequency of people's use of medical cotton buds has continued to increase. Cotton bud swabs no longer only appear in hospitals, but appear more in people's lives. Do you know what you need to pay attention to when using cotton bud swabs? Let's take a look together below.

1. Pay attention to the shelf life of medical cotton buds

Ordinary medical cotton buds are mostly packaged in double-layer paper. Such cotton bud swabs are sterilized by high temperature and high pressure. In the unopened state, the shelf life is usually two weeks.

However, in humid areas in the south, or in the rainy season in spring, the paper will easily be damp, which allows bacteria to penetrate into the packaging. Therefore, the shelf life of the cotton bud swab is likely to be only about one week. The medical cotton buds are packaged in a sealed package, and the shelf life is much longer than that of ordinary cotton bud swabs

2. Do not use household cotton bud swabs for wound disinfection

Generally, families don't often use medical cotton buds, and they don't have the condition to re-sterilize the remaining cotton bud swabs 24 hours after opening the package. Therefore, it is recommended to use those cotton bud swabs as ordinary cosmetic cotton bud swabs, or discard them, but do not use them for wound treatment, especially for babies.

Sterile cotton bud swabs are necessary for skin disinfection. Once contaminated, it may cause wounds to be infected.

Some people think now that cotton bud swabs must be stained with some disinfectant such as iodophor, alcohol, etc., so a little bacteria will not be a problem. They don't know that disinfection and sterilization are two different concepts.

Disinfection is to kill pathogenic microorganisms on articles; sterilization is to completely kill all pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms on articles, including spores. Sterilization includes disinfection, but disinfection cannot replace sterilization.

In other words, although disinfectant solutions such as iodophors and alcohol can kill pathogenic microorganisms, if the medical cotton buds are not sterile and contain microorganisms such as spores, the disinfectant solution will have nothing to do with it. And even the disinfectant solution will be contaminated as well. Therefore, ensuring the sterility of cotton bud swabs is an important measure to prevent infection.

3. The importance of the storage of the cotton bud swab

When storing medical cotton buds, ensure that the packaging is airtight, and note that the cotton bud swabs should be stored in a room with a relative humidity of no more than 80% without corrosive gas, which is well-ventilated. And high temperatures should be avoided.
